![]()
Atta Irahim Constantine is a 32-year-old contractor. A dual Leabanese-Syrian citizen, he was in Iraq to carry out contracts for the Lebanese Ministry of Trade. Mr. Constantine was seized along with Mustafa Abdul-Rassul Hussein, and his kidnappers subsequently contacted the Lebanese Embassy demanding ransom. A ransom was apparently paid, but the kidnappers reneged on a promise to release the men on the evening of the August 10. On August 11, the office of radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr announced that a Shiite militia had raided an apartment in the Shaad neighborhood and freed the 4 hostages found there, including Mr. Constantine. He was apparently held at this location along with Hisham Salem, Mustafa Abdul-Rassul Hussein and Haji Alawi. Mr. Constantine states that his kidnappers showed every sign of success in their chosen field. They drove new cars and owned mobile phones and expensive jewelry.
