Rifat Mohammed Rifat
![]()
Rifat Mohammed Rifat (also known as Ray) is a 41-year-old Iraqi-Canadian from Toronto. He returned to Iraq in November 2003 as a salesman for an Iraqi mobile phone company, and had recently started working for a Saudi firm doing repair/reconstruction work at Abu Ghraib prison (aka Baghdad Correctional Facility) when he disappeared. He was last seen leaving the prison. While Ottawa announced on April 21 that it had received reports that Mr. Rifat was alive and being held by an unknown group, there have been no official developments since then. Dan McTeague, the parliamentary secretary for foreign affairs intentionally chose to describe Mr. Rifat as "detained" rather than 'kidnapped' while refusing to elaborate on the reason beyond the comment that it was a "delicate situation". Mr. Rifat has a mother and a twin brother.
